Stand Up, Stand Together: Creating Culturally-Competent, Collaborative Schools and ClassroomsLocation: VIRTUAL The powerful racial justice uprising that began in the summer of 2020 served as an inflection point for social change. Beyond the macro-discussions of how our nation can address systemic racism, we also must consider the devastating impact these injustices have on students of color. Dr. Damien Sweeney will discuss how educators—of all backgrounds—can effectively address the stress and trauma that students experience, frame discussions on current events, and ultimately, create culturally competent in-school support. Additionally, Lauren Gallicchio and Heather Ransom will guide participants to explore the value of creating collaborative civic spaces in classrooms and effective communication among students. The goal of the Kentucky Department of Education’s Creating Collaborative Civic Spaces module is to support and empower schools and districts in cultivating and nurturing the collaborative civic spaces necessary to meet the instructional shifts within the Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) for Social Studies. Participants will:
