Stand Up, Stand Together: Creating Culturally-Competent, Collaborative Schools and Classrooms

Location: VIRTUAL
September 21 2021, 4 – 6 p.m. EST

The powerful racial justice uprising that began in the summer of 2020 served as an inflection point for social change. Beyond the macro-discussions of how our nation can address systemic racism, we also must consider the devastating impact these injustices have on students of color. Dr. Damien Sweeney will discuss how educators—of all backgrounds—can effectively address the stress and trauma that students experience, frame discussions on current events, and ultimately, create culturally competent in-school support.

Additionally, Lauren Gallicchio and Heather Ransom will guide participants to explore the value of creating collaborative civic spaces in classrooms and effective communication among students. The goal of the Kentucky Department of Education’s Creating Collaborative Civic Spaces module is to support and empower schools and districts in cultivating and nurturing the collaborative civic spaces necessary to meet the instructional shifts within the Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) for Social Studies.

Participants will:

  • Become self-aware of their own identities and biases and how they may impact anti-racist work;
  • Identify where schools, districts, and organizations are in their efforts to become anti-racist and know what to do to help their organization progress;
  • Understand the impact of race-based stress and trauma and will utilize a racial trauma lens within a multi-tiered system of supports;
  • Explore tools and resources to engage student voice in building a collaborative civic space; and
  • Analyze strategies that can be used to support current and controversial issue discussions through inquiry.

Grades K-12. Two hours PD credit. FREE.
