Tips for an Engaging Session

Tips for Engaging Sessions

Like our students, adults are engaged by discussion and involvement during a session. To ensure your session is interactive and models good classroom instruction, refer to the following tips:Connect with the audience with quick questions or a show of hands, use an attention grabber or use an ice-breaker.

  • Consider ways to get participants moving and involved from the beginning. Some ideas include:
    •  Have them respond to quotes, questions, or fact statements on charts in small groups.
    •  Solve a problem at their table.
    •  Play a quick game. This is most effective when it is relevant to the content.
  • Give an overview of the presentation with key ideas and/or goal of the presentation.
  • Make your session interesting and relevant by using visuals, models, simulations, research, current news, etc.
  • Group and regroup attendees around key issues, problems of practice, etc. and ask groups to share. This also allows educators to network and share knowledge.
  • Include time for paired or small group discussions, participating in an activity, and Q/A throughout the session.
  • Provide effective strategies or activities that can be used immediately.
  • Encourage attendees to share what they’re learning on social media.

When planning your proposal or any presentation, think about the best sessions you’ve attended and what made them outstanding. Model your session so your content is well-received and will be memorable for participants.
