Kentucky State Funding is Available for All Public School Students’ 2022 AP Exams

For the first time, the Kentucky General Assembly has included additional funding for Advanced Placement (AP) Exams for all public school students for the 2021-22 school year. Kentucky also will continue to provide full AP Exam coverage for low-income public school students and for AP computer science exams.

Kentucky will support 2022 AP Exams for public school students as follows:

  • 100% coverage for all AP Exams for public school students who qualify for the College Board fee reduction: The final fee charged by College Board per exam will be $0;
  • 100% coverage for all public school students taking an AP computer science exam: The final fee charged by College Board per exam will be $0; and
  • Partial coverage for all other public school students’ AP Exams (students who aren’t eligible for the College Board fee reduction): With the state’s subsidy, the final fee charged by College Board per exam will be $10.
    • Note: It remains a school-level decision whether to keep or forego the $9 per exam school rebate. If a school chooses not to forego the rebate, they may collect $19 per exam from students.

Be aware that additional exam fees—such as late order and unused/cancelled exam fees—are still applicable. These fees are not covered by Kentucky’s funding and are the responsibility of the school or family.

This fee assistance will remove an obstacle that would otherwise prevent many students from accessing the benefits that AP courses and exams provide, including the ability to save money on college tuition costs and graduate from college on time in four years. The latest data on score outcomes indicates that all AP students benefit from the experience of taking exams, so we encourage you to ensure all eligible students are aware of Kentucky’s funding commitment.
